How To Fix A Faulty Plumbing Vent

How To Fix A Faulty Plumbing Vent – One of the most common types of plumbing valve caps in Minnesota is the two-piece freeze-resistant plumbing cap, which has a lead piece that can be bent to fit over the plumbing valve and prevent water leaks.  They’re easy to install, there’s no rubber flange on the bottom to eventually split, and they’re made right here in Minnesota. The only downside?

Lead apparently has a sweet taste and was used to sweeten wine in ancient Rome. Squirrels love to munch on those sweet lead caps, and once squirrels get a taste for lead, they can’t seem to help themselves. They keep coming back. I suppose all that lead can’t be good for squirrels, but the main focus is how it affects one’s home.  When a plumbing cap is damaged, water can leak into the attic between the plumbing valve and the cap.  The photos below show some examples.

The wrong way to repair a cap is to cover it with tar.  It is ineffective and temporary.

Are you having trouble with a clogged plumbing valve? Find out how to diagnose and fix plumbing valve problems here.

If you have a gurgling sink or bad odors inside your home, you’ll probably know it’s clogged. If left unchecked, sewage gases can seep into your home and cause illness or even explosions.

When water flows down your drain or toilet, it can fill the pipe and create a vacuum. A duct vent allows air from above your roof to enter the ductwork. Then the air pressure is equalized and prevents the creation of a vacuum.

Cutting A Hole In Your Roof

A plumbing vent, or “stack” as the pros call it, runs from your plumbing through your attic to the top of your roof.

The best thing to do is to place your plumbing vent at the top of your roof so that the noxious fumes are removed from the surface of your nose.

In older homes, a vent may be located under kitchen or bathroom cabinets at a higher level than the trap.

Like a plumbing valve, a p-trap prevents foul-smelling gases from entering the toilet, sink, or floor drain. This piece of U-shaped pipe is under the sink and behind the toilet.

How To Install Vent Under Sink

If you don’t see a plumbing vent sticking out of your roof covering, you may have an internal or “cheat” vent installed. A “cheat” is a one-way valve that is installed after the trap on the toilet or sink drain line. Building codes often prevent its use due to inefficiency.

There are several ways to diagnose a clogged plumbing valve. Even if there isn’t a complete blockage, if you notice any of the following, check your plumbing vent pipe or call a professional to evaluate the situation.

If climbing your roof is “below your pay grade,” you can also open a hatch from inside your attic. You need enough space to access the vent pipe, which should be PVC, not cast iron.

PVC is a white plastic pipe that is usually used for plumbing and drainage. PVC stands for Polyvinyl Chloride and is a common alternative to metal pipes.

Place a part of the ventilator above your bathroom or kitchen. Cut a piece of PVC pipe large enough to run a plumbing snake down. Pipe chainsaws work quickly.

Pull the snake down until you find the clog. If the blockage is wet leaves or an animal, the blockage may be above your head. If so, just run the snake up.

To repair the PVC valve pipe, you can use rubber or PVC couplings with cement to bridge the part you have disconnected. The vent is often attached to the ceiling with a flexible rubber gasket, so it can be moved up or down to make this move easier.

If tree branches are hanging over your roof, move them back. When wet leaves and other debris get stuck inside the vent pipe, it doesn’t take long for there to be no room for air.

How To Unclog A Plumbing Vent Without Getting On Roof

Birds, mice, squirrels and squirrels can get into your plumbing vents. Whether they get stuck, nest, or leave unwanted byproducts, it’s possible they’ll block your vent.

It might seem like a good idea to close your vents to keep animals and leaves out. But the wrong vent cap can cause the problem you want to avoid. In cold weather, a vent hood can create an ice barrier on top of your hatch.

If regular maintenance like pest control and tree trimming still isn’t enough to keep your lines clean, your vent pipe may not be large enough to accommodate all the drains. You may need a wider stack.

In some areas, plumbing codes require a 4-inch-wide pipe to handle multiple kitchens and bathrooms. If all of your plumbing runs through a 2-inch stack, it may not be enough to properly drain all of your fixtures.

Signs Of A Damaged Rooftop Vent Pipe

Don’t let a clogged faucet put your family at risk. Especially when the solution is so simple.

Just follow the steps above to clean and clear the plumbing valve and your problems should disappear right down the drain.

If there’s a bigger problem or if messing around on the roof seems dangerous, don’t put yourself at risk.  Call the qualified professionals at Eyman at (402) 731-2727 to fix your plumbing problems. I don’t know what the big draw of leadership is, but squirrels seem to love destroying plumbing caps.  Specifically, they chew holes in the lead side of two-piece frost-resistant plumbing caps.  When the cap is damaged, water can leak into the attic between the plumbing valve and the cap.  The photos below show some examples.
