An eclectic approach to decorating can be challenging. For advice on how to pull off this unique aesthetic in your home, we invited interior designer Jennifer Adams,

Incorporating both rough and smooth textures adds interest to an interior, especially when you choose a simple color palette. “Think shaggy throw rugs or rugs, nubby or thick, woven fabrics on furniture, rough wood treasures or soft, smooth finishes on furniture and iron or other metals,” says Adams.
Adams advises that while combining textures is key, there’s also room to use one texture at least three times in different places in the home. It helps maintain a consistent look.
When it comes to eclectic decorating styles, know that your eye needs a place to rest. “Leave some space on shelves and tables, and consider the outline of the artwork for an interesting shape on the back wall,” says Adams. “It’s not just about what you display. Sometimes it’s about what you leave behind.”
No need to put your entire collection on display at once. To maintain an atmosphere full of character, Adams likes to mix things up. “Edit to just a few of your favorites and rotate pieces by variety or season,” she says.
Inspiring Eclectic Living Room Decor Ideas
When planning an eclectic style space, it’s easy to understand that color, texture and pattern will bring the look together. However, don’t forget about placement. “I think layout in a room is one of the more important things than color or fabric,” says Konig. “The layout of the furniture is what will make it comfortable and feel like the room you want to be in.” Before you start shopping for decor for the room, nail down where each piece of furniture will go. You may find that you don’t really have room for that odd floor lamp or 19th century chest.
As you organize your layout, remember: Although eclectic style involves combining styles and periods through a variety of items, a curated look shouldn’t lack focus. Joybird suggests creating a focal point (or emphasizing an existing one) with an attention-grabbing element—say, an accent wall, fireplace, or bold decorative item.
As you decide the decor you’ll incorporate into your eclectic design, don’t forget that the room is for living. “Let utility inform your decor,” says Konig. “It’s daunting to face an empty room and have to consider what colors and fabrics you’ll use to decorate it, but utility is a great decoration. Think about how you use the room to pull it together.” Consider baskets, bookshelves, drink trays and card tables. These elements give your room a comfortable, lively atmosphere.
The nature of eclectic style is diverse, but each room in your home should still complement the others. “Keep eclecticism in your home to create flow,” suggests Joybird. “If the style suddenly changes from room to room, your space will look disjointed.” If you decide your home is ready for an eclectic upgrade, make it a commitment that is reflected in every room throughout the home.
Eclectic Living Rooms Done Right
One color should serve as a unifying factor throughout your design. “Let color serve as the great equalizer, pulling the overall look together,” Joybird suggests. Whether your color is olive green or off-white, keep returning to it when decorating for a polished look.
When you’re choosing your go-to color, don’t be tempted to sample the paint on the wall, making your decision from a lineup of colors. “The colors will do weird things with each other, and it’ll get very confusing,” Konig says. “Draw the colors you like on the board, then look at them in private.” A painted board also comes in handy for reference when you’re shopping for decor or fabrics.
Aim to find balance in scale and symmetry. “Similar lines create harmony in a design, even if the pieces are of different styles, textures or periods,” says Joybird. Don’t sacrifice organization for diversity.
Styling an eclectic room doesn’t mean tossing every rule. “There’s a very fine line between layered and collected and busy and distracting,” says Joybird. “Put a cap on the number of contrasting styles in a room to avoid things looking cluttered.”

When you try a new eclectic style, and don’t like the result, don’t be tempted to change it right away. “Wait until the room is full and stay with it for a while,” says Konig. “Things that seem too big when you first decorate a room [like an unexpectedly bright color] fade into the background when the space is filled with furniture and other objects.”
Eclectic style is characterized by an array of fabrics, patterns and art objects. “Home accents like rugs, paintings, objets d’art and throw pillows are convenient ways to bring inconsistency to any room,” says Joybird.
