Personalizing Your Space

Personalizing Your Space – Renovating your space isn’t just about decluttering and organizing; he also knows how to personalize his room so that it feels more familiar, more comfortable, more “you”.

But how do we know if our space needs a little more personality? The most obvious sign that your bedroom doesn’t reflect your personality or preferences is that you don’t feel comfortable in your space. You are sitting in your room and you feel that something is missing. It feels blah or generic. Or, the colors don’t suit you or your taste.

Personalizing Your Space

My eDesign client Kelsey (check out her website here!) and her husband moved out of town and into a house that was previously owned by someone else. The home office used to have deep blue walls. This type of blue was never in the shade that Kelsey likes or is used to.

In Your Space

She started by painting the room white, but after that, she wasn’t sure what pieces to buy to personalize her room. She already had a desk and chair, her favorite marketing and business books, a bookshelf that she wasn’t sure would match her personal style.

Figure out how you want to use it and what you want your space to look and feel like.

It is very important to first identify the main functions for which you want to use the space, as this will largely determine how you need to place the pieces of furniture, whether you will need additional lighting , and how to style your space.

In Kelsey’s case, she works as an online business coach. He holds many online classes or webinars, records videos or podcasts for his brand, and brainstorms a lot.

Best Ways To Personalize Your Space (and Turn Your House Into A Home)

Most importantly for her, Kelsey wanted to be able to “bring her brand to life” in her home office, so we took many of our design cues from her brand and business personality.

During our online consultation, Kelsey told me she wanted the space to feel cozy and comfortable, but still make it productive and inspiring enough to work on content for her brand and courses.

We took cues from her business for the color palette and decor of her room that we would use.

We knew what her main neutral colors would be, and put them on the main surfaces (like the walls, ceiling, and floor). We also determined what accent colors to use following her business colors, and assigned them to art, soft furnishings, and other decor.

But sometimes, these things are not as clear to us as they are to her. So how do you find out what makes your space feel more personal to you?

If you’re a frequent Pinner like me (and most of my clients for that matter), go through all your Pinterest boards again and try to see: Are there common images, icons, colors, or themes that run through them? are there?

Kelsey gravitated toward the curved walls, as it was a recurring feature in many of the design palettes she provided for us.

The depth of things that interest you personally is important to know which pieces to add to your space.

Knowing the emotion words helps you narrow down your design cues to ones that you feel closely match the feel you want from your space.

Say, you love the look of a marble-topped tulip table with a sexy pedestal leg. But if you want a room to feel casual and masculine, a thick, wrought-iron table with a wood-reinforced top might fit the mood you want for your space.

Look to your clothes for color cues that are meaningful to you. If you wear that color, you most likely want to see it in your environment.

But if you are like Kelsey and have identified more than 3 colors, then choose a neutral base color first, and apply this to the main surfaces and large pieces of furniture.

In our proposed design, we added accent colors with art, decorative accents, and soft furnishings, like pillows.

Are you drawn to the stars? When you walk into a home or a design store, do you immediately run into star-shaped decorative items? Do you like circular or spherical forms? When you go to museums, do you immediately look at dark and bloody short films, or bright and vibrant still lifes?

As mentioned earlier, Kelsey seems to love sequins and polka dots. In fact, this is evident in many of its brands and business products.

So we created an art print that matched her personality and brand, which she could display in a very prominent part of her room. She had this printed by Canva, and framed with a store bought frame.

Then we also found wall decals that let her hang out her favorite iconography.

Here are our renderings of Kelsey’s home office, featuring beautiful Visionary art by Ayana de Ocampo, and polka dots from Urban Walls, and her favorite functional and decorative items.
